SinCity Fit Challenge Wrap Up

The 2014 Nevada Police and Fire Games SinCity Fit Challenge is in the books!  After taking a day to let it all sink in, I can definitely say that it was a huge success.   My goal was to throw an event that was a great test of fitness, was fun for the spectators and athletes, brought the Vegas Crossfit Community together, and gave back to the Police and Firefighter community.   We had trouble staying on schedule, and I apologize for that, but we did the best we could with the number of volunteers we had.   142 athletes completed 6  scored events all in 1 day!  It was a great challenge but we pulled it off because of how hard each and every volunteer worked!

First off I would like to thank Rand Allison (one of the nicest guys I know).  He did a great job on the mic all day long.  But more importantly, he put in so much work leading up to the event that I could write a book about it.  I know, being part of the Henderson Police Department, he would like to be out there competing, just as I would.  But the most important thing to Rand was that everyone enjoyed the event, especially the policemen and firemen and women.  There is no way this event would even happen without Rand.  We are lucky to have you as part of the SCCF family.

Next I would like to thank Bobbie Reese for being there every step of the way.  What a great job she did of managing the judges and athletes.  And as always she was calm, cool, and collected, even when shit got really close to the fan.  Bobbie is so easy and fun to work with.  I couldn’t ask for a better manager/trainer/event coordinator/PR Rep.  I heard she looked great on the news.  She can do it all and I’m proud to have her as the face of SinCity CrossFit.

I also gotta give a shout out to Sheena Howard and Jessica Allison.  They had the not so fun job of inputting all the scores.  Not only is this super stressful, but you don’t even get to see the event go down.  They were in the office inputting scores non stop.  That’s 852 scores they posted so that athletes and spectators could see their results online.  And even though they were so busy, they still took the time to answer hundreds of questions throughout the day.  And props to Bjorn for hooking up the live wod scoring program.

I gotta give a shout out to DJ Andy Gil!  He worked the night before in AZ, and drove up the morning of on almost no sleep to lay down the beats for the event.  He also is the main reason there were so many awesome raffle prizes and sponsors.  From channel 8 being there, to getting the event on the billboards, he hooked it up in every possible way.

Judging is a tough job that doesn’t get enough credit.  Big thank you to all my judges.  We were shorthanded and many of you judged all day long.  Max Helmer did an awesome job of head judge and had the balls to make the right calls every time.  Alex Brown was outside running the obstacle course all day.  Thank you for taking charge and making sure it ran smoothly.

All the judges worked there asses off and I can’t thank them enough.  Martin, Stuart, Tez, Sarah V, Justin, Tana, Bob, Rose, Stephen, Ed, Angelina, Serena, Jazmin, Fatima, Damary, Sarah D, Dennis D, Brooke, Kaylee, Travis g, Tanya, Eric M, Shaun, Mike M, Ashley, Leah, CJ, Patrick, Jon T and Brent.  And all the other judges that I can’t think of right now.  I asked a lot from you all and you all stepped up!

Krista drew up the event logo that we used on the shirts, which turned out pretty badass.  She was also there to help manage the athlete area and vendor area.  And did a little bit of everything up at the front desk with Bobbie.  She also helped in many other areas which I can’t even remember.  Thank you so much for all that you did.

Thanks to Antonio for getting video footage of the entire event! I can’t wait to see the sick videos he’s gonna put together!  And taking the time to shoot and edit the workout demo videos was invaluable.  It saved us so much time not having to demo everything at the event.  I also have to thank Ray G for all the cool pics you see below.  Even though he was competing, he used his off time to capture so many awesome shots.

Mike and Kelly Meyers came through in so many different ways.  Mike hooked us up with the Rockstars and the waters!  Him and Shaun also helped set up, judge all day, and sat in the desert for 2 hours handing out bacon tape.  Kelly (the body mechanic) did a great job of working on athletes all day with the massages and rock taping.  And Mike spent about 4 hours on Sunday fixing and repairing all the holes on The Pit mats that some ladies in heels decided to walk all over.

Thanks to all my friends who helped set up and clean up before and after the event.  Brent helped me move weights and set up til 1am the night before.  And he was clutch when it came to moving the equipment between heats.  He probably judged every single heat as well.  Big thank you to Sam for helping me clean up before and after.  Thanks to LJ, Alex, Sam, Rand, and Kyle for helping me move the bleachers.   Gary, Shaun, and Eric helped set up the night before also.  And thank you Mike Springer for letting us borrow a some kettlebells and barbells.  Last but not least, Doug Reese for hanging up the banners and fixing anything that breaks in the gym everyday.

I want to give  a shout out to all our sponsors:  Rockstar, Fuel for Fire, Progenex and Nikole, The Dillinger, Atlas Power Wraps, RX Smartgear, Albertsons, Nevada Home Fitness and Travis, Sting and Jon Perry, WJ Bradley Mortgage and Jhill, IPOF, Extreme Ventures, Scooters Pub, Clear Channel, 104.3, Reebok, and Rockstar Rescue, and Fitaid!

I also want to congratulate all the athletes.  We had competitors all the way from Brazil, Canada, Indiana, Colorado, West Virginia, Arizona, California, and Hawaii!  You guys were so fun to watch and it was hard not to cheer you on.  I wish I had the time to hang out with each of you.  Some of you literally left your blood, sweat, and tears out on the mat.  We actually  had over 30 different CrossFit affiliates representing!  And I’m proud to say, many of which spawned from our box over the last few years.  Thank you all for coming and growing the CrossFit community with us.

The full results can be seen on the leaderboard on yesterdays post.  And I would like to congratulate everyone that made it on the podium.  But, of course, I would like to highlight the SCCF athletes that all did so well.  Our own Kyle Foss took 1st place in the men’s rx division and took home $400 as well as some other goodies!  And his wife Suzie Foss also came in 1st in the women’s division, with Noe and Megan rounding out the top 3 and winning $400, $200, and $100!  Christina A also took 3rd overall in the women’s scaled division!  Our ladies killed it taking the 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, and 8 spots in the rx division.  And Ray got 2nd place in the Men’s Masters civilian division.

Melissa showed so much heart finishing the last workout with tears in her eyes, because her hands had torn so badly on the previous event.  She still came in 4th overall even though she could not complete the final workout.  Bryan also had a strong showing coming in 5th overall.  And Melinda and Courtney cracked the top 10 as well.  I am so proud of all of our SCCF members that competed.  It was the first time for many of you and you all did great!

I definitely want to thank God for letting the event go well, keeping everyone safe, and giving me the ability to keep my composure when things got crazy.  It was a little stressful and there was a lot going on, so I apologize if I seemed rude or short with anyone.  Now that it’s over I can sit back and replay all the heats in my head and enjoy all the cool moments with a smile on my face.  And finally, I want to thank my wife Sheena, once again.  For supporting me in so many ways.  For doing all the littl
e things I suck at doing.  I would be a mess without her.  She is always there for me and allows me to do what I love to do: eat, sleep, and breathe CrossFit.
