Athlete of the Week – May 8, 2013

Athlete of the WeekName: Dan DohertyAge: 47Occupation: Commercial Real Estate BrokerageSingle/married/family? Married with two girlsFavorite activity outside of CrossFit? – Fishing but I gave it up to begin CrossFit last year. Favorite workout music? – Country, but Max won’t play country, so I guess Rap and Pop.Favorite place to eat? – Sunrise Café, Café Rio, and Hanks. Do you or did you play any sports? – I played baseball and football in high school, but was not very good in either discipline.  When you sit the bench like I did, your knees and other joints don’t get abused too much, so I guess I am thankful now that I don’t have any major injuries that I have to constantly nurse. How long have you been CrossFitting? – 8 monthsWhich SinCity location do you work out at, and how did you get started there? – I train at South, but have been to west and the main box as well.  I continually heard about Crossfit for about a year before I decided to try it.  I was getting my teeth cleaned at the dentist office and the oral hygienist (Cathy) was telling me about CrossFit and she was very, very fit.  She told me it was right across the parking lot, so I no longer had any excuses.  I went over right after my cleaning and signed up.  The first 2 weeks were horrible, but I stuck it out and never looked back. Favorite movement?  Toes to Bar, as it takes some skill and improvement comes fast if you practice. Favorite workout? – Fight gone bad, as it takes not only endurance, but also a good game plan.  You rest on the sumo high lift and the row and go crazy on the box jumps, wall balls and push jerk. Least favorite movement? – Squat Snatch as I have mobility issues in my shoulders that I am working on. Best fran time:  6:25 but not with RX weight       1rm clean n jerk:   215        Best cindy score:  too bad to mention! Why do you go to SCCF?  No matter who you are I think you need to stay competitive in something in life.  CrossFit gives me an arena to be competitive in.  Not in a negative way, but in a supportive way and seeing myself and others reach new PR’s and accomplish new goals makes me very happy.  Sometimes it is just about not coming in last. What is something people would be surprised to know about you?  I wax my garage floor every month. How has CrossFit improved your life?  CrossFit gives me something to look forward each and every day.  I have tried almost every type of fitness activity including body building, triathlons, marathons, and gym rat weight lifting.  Nothing has inspired me like CrossFit!  It is my passion and part of my daily routine.  I also get a big kick out of seeing new people get involved and seeing it change their lives as well.  My sister Lori, nephew Jerry, and wife Debbie are now all doing CrossFit and it is amazing to see the changes in their attitudes and bodies.    What or who inspires you the most? –  Seeing how hard everyone pushes themselves on a daily basis.  If you are not giving it 100%; which I don’t always do, you feel guilty when you look up at someone else who is giving 100%. Biggest achievement since you started/ what you are most proud of?  Learning double unders, chest to bar, toes to bar, knees to elbows, the list goes on and on.  Also doing overhead squats with something other than PVC is a big deal for me! What are your fitness goals for this year?  My goals for 2013 are to get below 190 lbs. and continue my mobility and technique training so my Olympic movements go up in weight.  Also to get much more efficient on box jumps and wall balls and continue to bring new members to CrossFit and continue to help changes peoples lives.  Workout of the DayMax Effort Pullupsthen,Run or Row 5k Post times to beyond the whiteboard.Metcon WorkoutRun or Row 5kor“Baseline”500m row40 squats30 situps20 pushups10 pullupsPost times to beyond the whiteboard.
